Hokage

The village Kage is the strongest ninja in the hidden village. The Kage serves as the pillar upon which the village stands and the strength a village presents to the other ninja countries largely depends upon the strength of the Kage in power. They have excellent chakra and stamina and know the most jutsu techniques.

Shodai Hokage (First Hokage)

One of the founders of Leaf, Senju Hashirama helped establish the ideal of all the Hokage who followed. The Hokage serves as the foundation which Leaf village sits. The Hokage would love his village and do all in his power to protect it, even giving his life in the line of duty to ensure its survival.

Nidaime Hokage (Second Hokage)

Senju Tobirama also helped in the founding of Leaf, he was the younger brother of Hashirama. Like Shodai Hokage, Tobirama helped establish the principle that the Hokage will die for those people precious to them.

Sandaime Hokage (Third Hokage)

Sandaime Hokage became Hokage at a very young age. He was chosen as Hokage over another talented ninja named Danzou. Sarutobi Hiruzen was known as the Professor, a ninja with extraordinary skill and knowledge of jutsu. He would later pass on his knowledge to his students Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru. Jiraiya would then in turn pass on his knowledge to Namikaze Minato, who would become Yondaime Hokage. After Yondaime Hokage's death, the Sandaime came out of retirement to lead his village again.

Yondaime Hokage (Fourth Hokage)

Sandaime Hokage first wanted Orochimaru to succeed him, but his evil ways caused Hiruzen to choose Namikaze Minato instead. Yondaime Hokage was faced with a difficult challenge not long after being appointed. One of the great demons, the Kyuubi fox attacked his village. Many ninja died and Yondaime had to give his life to beat the Kyuubi and imprison him in his newborn son. His death caused the Sandaime Hokage to come out of retirement and act as Hokage once again.

Godaime Hokage (Fifth Hokage)

Though Tsunade was the granddaughter of Shodai Hokage and a student of the Sandaime Hokage, she was reluctant to become Godaime Hokage. Her boyfriend and little brother both had dreams of becoming Hokage and died while trying to further that goal. When she met Uzumaki Naruto she thought that he was also going down a foolish path, but his hard work and determination inspired her to think that becoming Hokage was a worthwhile thing.

Ninja Ranks

The ninja in a hidden village have their own skill levels which help delineate what rank they are. The most talented ninja in the village is generally the Kage who leads the village, the lowest tier is made up of those young individuals training in the ninja academy. Listed below is the ranking from lowest skill level to highest. Groups such as the ANBU are not a level, but rather a specialized unit made up of ninja from the Chuunin and Jounin levels.

Ninja Academy Student

Ninja Academy students like Konohamaru are taught the basic jutsu skills. Once they have mastered the needed skills, they are able to graduate and become actual ninja. However if the new Genin do not impress their Jounin sensei, they can be sent back to the Academy for further training.

Genin

Genin are the lowest of ninja skill levels. They possess a knowledge of all the basic ninja skills and will do lower C & D rank missions with their Jounin sensei. Once the Genin has successfully undertaken eight missions, they can be sponsored by their Jounin sensei for the Chuunin Exam.

Chuunin

The Chuunin is the basic journeyman ninja of the village. These ninja can become field doctors or teachers. They were formerly Genin who were promoted for displaying excellent intelligence, strategy and combat skills in the Chuunin Exam. Chuunin have the equivalent rank of military captain, exhibiting strong stamina, knowledge and inner wisdom.

Special Jounin

Special Jounin are ninjas who have gained high Jounin-level skills in one area of ninja arts. These are ninja like Morino Ibiki, who is highly skilled at interrogation and torture. Ninja attain the rank of Special Jounin through official appointment.

Jounin

The Jounin are ninja who are highly skilled in all jutsu skills and arts. Ninja attain the rank of Jounin through official appointment. The Jounin generally serve as squad commander for mission operations.

Kage

The village Kage is the strongest ninja in the hidden village. The Kage serves as the pillar upon which the village stands and the strength a village presents to the other ninja countries largely depends upon the strength of the Kage in power. They have excellent chakra and stamina and know the most jutsu techniques. Only the Five Great Shinobi Countries are allowed to call their head ninja by the Kage name.

Akatsuki Oraganization

A criminal organization led by highly dangerous S-ranked or higher level ninja. The top of Akatsuki is usually dominated by ten of the most powerful ninjas in the organization. There are also numerous suboordinates working for Akatsuki as well as sleeper agents inside various ninja villages. Akatsuki's goal is to force all the ninja villages into submission and achieve world domination. For that they need to accumlate large sums of money, mostly through underground criminal activities. The money will be used to field a vast army of mercenary ninja that will take on any mission at lower costs compared to all the ninja villages. This will force the hidden villages to crumble due to lack of funding, and all the countries will have to depend on Akatsuki. Akatsuki is also in the process of collecting the nine tailed beasts and sealing them. The purpose is to harness the beasts' powers and use them to start wars in countries. The symbol for Akatsuki is a red cloud over a black background.

Little is known about the mysterious mastermind behind the entire Akatsuki organization. His Akatsuki ring has the character for 'Nothing' and he wears it on his right thumb. His real name has been revealed to be Pein, and he is a missing-nin from the Hidden Village in the Rain. Although he has not been seen in combat so far, the leader has displayed some powerful abilities. His greatest ability is likely his ability to extract and trap the essence of a tailed beast. He does so by summoning a giant demon-sealing statue, but several Akatuski members need to be present to complete the sealing ritual. Pein also has a telepathy-like ability that allows Akatsuki members to communicate with each other through astral projection wherever they are located. He has also demonstrated the ability to shapeshift human sacrifices into clones of other Akatsuki members by using a portion of the member’s chakra. Except that their power is limited by the amount of chakra used, these clones are otherwise indistinguishable from the original. Lastly, Pein may have the uncanny ability to control rainfall over the entire Rain Village. When Jiraiya infiltrated the village, Pein was able to sense him just from Jiraiya distrurbancing the rainfall.

Pein’s motive is to achieve world domination by wiping out the other shinobi villages. The first step is to gather large amounts of money, mostly through criminal activity. Next, create a large mercenary army that will perform missions below the cost of what the other shinobi villages charge. The leader plans to use the tailed beasts to start wars that will benefit Akatsuki, and then stop them at his leisure to solidify Akatsuki’s reputation. The other shinobi villages will not be able to compete and eventually collapse since accepting missions are their primary source of income. When this occurs, Akatsuki will be the only major military power remaining and can easily conquer the world with the power of the tailed beasts at its control.

It has been revealed in Naruto manga chapter 363 that Pein may not be the true head of Akatsuki, and that Tobi is giving the orders.

Pein's original name was Nagato. He, along with Yahiko and Konan, were trained by Jiraiya during their youths. Nagato's Rinnegan ability allowed him to master all types of ninjutsu and to use all six chakra elements. It is not known exactly what transpired after Jiraiya left, but during that period Nagato's close friend Yahiko died. Nagato had a change in personality as well as ideals, so much so that Jiraiya can hardly recognize him after their reunion. Pein has grown so powerful that he single-handedly killed the previous leader, Hanzou, and took over the Rain village and proclaimed himself a "god."

Deidara

Deidara is a missing-nin formerly from the Hidden Village of the Rock. He is a clever and skilled fighter but prefers to rely on evasion and long range attacks to bring his enemies down. He also seems to have a high tolerance for pain and is capable of fighting on even with his arm torn off. Deidara’s specialty is the manipulation and use of explosive clay-based jutsu. On the palm of each of his hands is a mouth that can consume and mold his clay into whatever shape and power he desires. Deidara makes his explosive clay by infusing them with a high concentration of chakra. The amount of jutsu he can perform is limited by the amount of clay he has prepared, but even a small clump of clay can be transformed into a much large shape. Deidara seems to prefer to mold his clay into bird-themed animal shapes. When activated, these clay sculptures are animated and are capable of flight. One of Deidara’s tactics is to ride on one of his clay birds to maintain his distance from his enemy, all the while sending smaller and speedier explosive clay birds to attack.

Deidara's Akatsuki ring has the character for 'Blue' and he wears it on the index finger of his right hand. Deidara was previously Sasori’s partner, but unlike most other Akatsuki two-man teams, he actually respected Sasori. Deidara considers himself as an artist and sees fine art to be something of extreme beauty but fleeting in existence like that of an explosion. Although he considers Sasori as a fellow artist, they argued constantly because Sasori saw fine art as things that were made to last for eternity, like his puppets. Tobi is Deidara’s current partner but their relationship is more like that of a comedic duo. Tobi is a relatively new member to Akatsuki and his sarcastic comments constantly get on Sasori’s nerves.

Sasori is a missing-nin from the Hidden Village in the Sand who joined Akatsuki. He is also known as Sasori of the Red Sand and one of his symbols is a red scorpion (‘Sasori’ means scorpion). Sasori’s parents died when he was very young, so his grandmother Chiyo cared for him. Chiyo taught Sasori puppetry jutsu, something Sasori became very adept at using. He was the craftsman behind many puppets used in Sand's puppet division even today, including Kankuro's Karasu, Sanshouo, and Kuroari. Two of Sasori's first creations were the puppet imitations of his dead parents, which he had tried to use to replace the affection of his real parents but failed because puppets can't imitate human emotions.

Sasori eventually became very skilled at converting human bodies into puppets. Twenty years ago before the start of Naruto part II, Sasori left the village of Sand. Before Sasori disappeared, he kidnapped and killed the Third Kazekage of Sand, eventually turning him into one of his human puppets. Human puppets are especially deadly because they retain the chakra nodes of the previously living individual. This allows Sasori to manipulate the chakra and use the special abilities of the previously living person through the human puppet. At some point during that period, Sasori also converted his own body into a puppet. Because puppets have no chakra nodes, Sasori persevered and encased his heart in a special capsule that allows him to manipulate chakra through a puppet body. Over the years, Sasori has accumulated a vast human puppet collection. Supposedly it contains 298 puppets, each of whom was an opponent he defeated. To add to their deadliness, Sasori coats the multitudes of traps and weaponry installed into his puppets with his potent poisons.

Sasori's Akatsuki ring has the character for 'Ball' and he wears it on his left thumb. After joining Akatsuki, Sasori was paired up with Orochimaru. The two supposedly accomplished many large scale operations together before Orochimaru left the organization. Sasori was then partnered with Deidara. Sasori considers his human puppetry a form of art whose beauty is eternal. Deidara, on the other hand, sees beauty only in the brief instant of an explosion. Even though the two often bicker about this, they do work well together and Deidara respects Sasori.

Along with controlling puppets, Sasori also uses mind control jutsu to force individuals to obey him and become his spies. Although Sasori likely has a large network of spies and subordinates working for him, the only two to be revealed so far are Kabuto Yakushi and Yuura.

Itachi Uchiha

Itachi joined the Akatsuki Organization and was paired with Kisame Hoshigaki. Unlike most Akatsuki two-man teams, they appear to respect each other and work well together. Itachi is a ring-bearing member of Akatsuki, his ring has the character 'Scarlet' and he waers it on the ring finger of his righ hand. When Orochimaru was still part of Akatsuki, he attempted to defeat Itachi in order to gain his Sharingan abilities. However, it was Itachi who easily defeated Orochimaru and severs his left hand. It was because of this incident that Orochimaru betrayed Akatsuki and left the organization.

Itachi is an efficient fighter in battle, and usually relies on his genjutsu abilities instead of mounting physical attacks. He is highly intelligent, shows little emotion, and is ruthless in battle; caring little for the suffering of his opponents. Itachi’s genjutsu abilities are some of the most powerful encountered so far in the Naruto series. Once caught, it is nearly impossible for the enemy to free himself unless aided by allies.

Kisame Hoshigaki

Kisame is one of the ten ring-bearing members of Akatsuki, the symbol on his ring is ‘South’ and he wears on the ring finger of his left hand. He is a missing nin from the Hidden Village of Mist, being originally a member of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist. Kisame was nicknamed the “Sourge” and always carries with him his giant sword Samehada.

Kisame takes pleasure in battle and enjoys seeing his opponents in pain. It is not uncommon for him to use excessive force in a fight. Kisame possesses incredible superhuman strength and a very large chakra reserve, said to be the largest in the Akatsuski organization. True to his shark-like appearance, Kisame uses mostly water type and shark-themed jutsus. His water techniques are of such high caliber that he can literally create water from nothing and turn any landscape to his advantage by submerging it in water.

Tobi

Tobi was introduced as a relatively new member of Akatsuki and one of Zetsu’s subordinates. He was later made a full-fledged Akatsuki member to replace Sasori as Deidara’s partner. Tobi’s face is hidden by an orange mask which features a clockwise spiral pattern (theories) with one hole near the center for his right eye. He has a goofy personality and likes to joke around with Deidara, though the latter often loses patience with him.

Tobi has not been seen using any attack abilities so far in the series. In nearly every battle, his most signature move has been to run away. But Tobi has also shown an amazing ability to recover from devastating attacks; where this ability stems from is unknown.

In chapter 364 of the Naruto manga, Tobi has identified himself as Madara Uchiha, an ancient member of the former Uchiha clan who battled against the First Hokage. However, many fans believe that Tobi is not Madara, but Obito Uchiha, one of Kakashi’s former teammates who gave him his left Sharingan eye before his death (theories). It has been shown through a close-up of the hole in his mask that Tobi indeed has a Sharingan eye.

Hidan

Hidan is one of the newest and most foul-mouthed members of Akatsuki. He is a missing nin from a village who worships an evil god named Jashin, but which country and what the name of his village is yet unknown. Hidan’s partner is Kakuzu, and although the two share similar “immortality” abilities, their personalities are very different. Because of their respective unique abilities, Hidan and Kakuzu are sometimes referred to as the “Zombie Brothers” by other members of Akatsuki.

It is not known if Hidan’s unique abilities are directly related to his religion or not, but Hidan is firm to believe so and devotes much of his time praising Jashin and conducting meditation. One of his more unusual rituals is to stab himself with his weapon and lie motionless within a triangle-circle design on the ground. Hidan always performs this ritual after a difficult battle, but it can last over three hours much to Kakazu’s annoyance.

Hidan’s trademark ability is to kill an opponent by damaging his own body. After drawing the circular symbol of his religion on the ground, Hidan then attempts to draw his opponent’s blood and consume it. Once this is done, as long as Hidan is inside his circle, any damage he inflicts onto himself is directly transferred to his opponent’s body. Because Hidan is immortal, he can damage his own body, even destroying organs or severing limbs, as much as he wants without dying.

After killing Asuma Sarutobi, Shikamaru Nara planned his revenge and set a trap inside the Nara sacred forest. There, he blew Hidan into several pieces using hundreds of explosive tags. Hidan’s still talking remains fell into a deep pit and was buried alive. Though no longer considered an Akatsuki member, Hidan is still alive.

Kakuzu

Kakuzu is a missing ninja from Takigakure and Hidan's partner in Akatsuki. He himself has claimed to have fought the First Hokage of Konoha, if this is true then Kakuzu could be over one hundred years old. Because of each of their respective abilities that allows them to basically ‘not die’, Kakuzu and Hidan are often referred to as the “Zombie Brothers” by other members of Akatsuki.

Kakuzu has a deep love for money, and uses his membership in Akatsuki as a means to seek out valuable bounties. Because money is the only thing he relies on, Kakuzu dislikes needing to be partnered with someone in Akatsuki. He has killed all of his previous partners in fits of rage, and thus was paired with the immortal Hidan so he wouldn't need to keep finding a replacement.

Kakuzu's body is composed of large amounts of black threads, allowing him to sew things (such as Hidan's dismembered body parts) back together. The threads are also capable of piercing flesh, which Kakuzu uses to remove the still-beating hearts of his opponents for his personal use. By integrating these healthier organs into his body he can escape death and extend his life indefinitely. He can carry five hearts at a time. Hearts that he is not using are stored in animal masks sewn to his back.

The masks can be detached during combat situations to shoot elemental blasts at his opponents, and can quickly be recalled to his body if he needs their heart. Kakuzu's masks are systematically destroyed soon after a battle with Team Asuma and Team Kakashi. After Naruto Uzumaki leaves his final heart on the brink of failure, Kakuzu is easily finished off by Kakashi Hatake.

Zetsu

Zetsu is a more mysterious member of Akatsuki whose background remains unclear. Zetsu does not wear a head protector but it is believed he is a missing nin from Kusagakure, the Hidden Village in the Grass. The venus-flytrap structure of his body supports this notion as most ninja from Kusagakure have abilities associated with nature or plant life.

The black and white divide of Zetsu’s face is more than just decoration. Zetsu actually possesses two personalities that exist at the same time, meaning he can have a conversation with himself. The black side of his face has metal studs similar to Pein’s, its personality seems to be more sinister, but it has also proven itself to be highly knowledgeable about jutsus and even bloodline abilities like the Sharingan. The white side is the exact opposite and is more easy going and carefree.

Zetsu’s main role in Akatsuki is to act as long range reconnaissance and provide espionage / infiltration support. He can do this quite effectively by melding in with his surroundings and concealing his chakra. Lastly, one of his more gruesome roles is to clean-up the evidence of dead bodies associated with Akatsuki. Zetsu does this by consuming the entire body, making him a cannibal.

Konan

Konan is the last Akatsuki member to have her name revealed, she is often seen together with Pein. She is the only female member of the ten ring-bearing members of Akatsuki and wears a decorative paper flower. Her Akatsuki ring has the character for 'White' and she wears it on her right middle finger. Konan's powers appear to be paper based, she has the ability to transform her body into thousands of pieces of oragami paper. Each individual sheet can fold itself into different shapes, such as butterflies for reconnaissance missions.

It has been revealed that Konan was once a student under Jiraiya. She, along with fellow Rain village orphans Yahiko and Nagato, was taken in by Jiraiya for about a year during the Great Ninja War to be trained in various shinobi techniques. However, after meeting Jiraiya again, Konan appears to hold a deep grudge against her former sensei for completely abandoning her and other orphans after their training was complete.

Madara Uchiha

Madara Uchiha was once the leader of the Uchiha clan and one of the founder's of Konoha. He formed an alliance with the leader of the Senju shinobi clan of the forest to form a new organization which eventually became the Hidden Leaf. The leader of the Senju clan was none other than the First Hokage of Konoha. Madara and the First fought over the future policies of the village which culminated in an epic battle at the Valley of the End. Madara lost but lived on due to his immortality and left Konoha and his clan to find the Akatsuki organization. He hid in Akatsuki’s shadow and operated in secret. Madara was responsible for unleashing the Kyuubi onto Konoha at the beginning of the series. But his plans were thwarted when the Fourth Hokage sealed Kyuubi inside Naruto.

Madara had a younger brother and both grew up with great talent as shinobis and Sharingan users. They learned to obtain the Mangekyou Sharingan by murdering their friends and grew even more powerful. They were the first of the Uchihas to ever obtain the Mangekyou and Madara was made the leader of the clan. But Madara soon succumbed to the side effect of the Mangekyou, which rendered the user blind in exchange for its power. In desperation, Madara plucked out the eyes of his own brother to replace his own. Madara regained his sight but also a permanent Mangekyou Sharingan and immortality as a result of the transplant. With his new powers, the Uchihas defeated all shinobi clans they met. Madara established a ritual to have Uchiha members murder their friends to gain the Mangekyou and murder their siblings to make it permanent. This cursed destiny was eventually halted when Madara was defeated by the First Hokage and was forced to leave his clan.

Madara carried a large fan on his back. Whether this was an actual weapon or just symoblized the Uchiha clan is not known. In the latest Naruto manga, Tobi has claimed to be the current form of Madara.

Orochimaru was once a student of the Third Hokage, Sasutobi, but betrayed Konoha and has become one of its most hated enemies. Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade were originally teammates. They were such skillful shinobi that they gained the title of the “Three Legendary Ninja” or “Sannin.” Orochimaru was Sarutobi’s favorite and he took him under his guidance since Orochimaru had lost his parents at a young age. However, he soon realized there was a dark side to Orochimaru.

Orochimaru craved for power and would use any means to obtain it. Sarutobi had originally wanted Orochimaru to succeed him as the next Hokage of Konoha, but realizing his pupil’s dark ambitions, he nominated Jiraiya’s student instead. Orochimaru was angered by this and continued his pursuit of power in other ways. He eventually developed an obsession for obtaining immortality and started learning and developing forbidden jutsus. When Sarutobi discovered that Orochimaru had been abducting villagers for his experiments, he confronted his pupil but could not bring himself to kill him. After this event, Orochimaru left Konoha but vowed to one day return and bring total destruction to the shinobi village.

After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru joined the Akatsuki organization as one of its ten ring-bearing members; his ring, ‘Void’, is on the pinky of the left hand. His partner was Sasori, and the two apparently accomplished many great feats for Akatsuki.

Waterfall Country is a small country adjacent to the the Land of Fire and Earth and Grass. The country has a small shinobi village which is hidden behind a waterfall. The village surrounds a lagoon in the center which stands the Great Tree. The Waterfall village was first featured in the Naruto anime OAV #2 (Jump Festa 2004); its shinobis are talented in water manipulation jutsus. The Akatsuki member known as Hidan is from the Waterfall village.

Amegakure: Hidden Village in the Rain

The Rain ninjas specialize in specific types of water element jutsus. Amegakure is highly secretive and protective of its information; many countries complained about this fact when the Chuunin exams were held there. Because of the high level of security, it is very difficult to receive news from the inside. As a result, a costly civil war between two factions within the village was nearly unknown to outsiders for many years. The war ended after the assassination of the former leader of the Rain, a legendary shinobi known as Hanzou, and the extermination of all his relatives and allies. After that, the village fell under the control of Pein, a mysterious shinobi who was formerly believed to be the leader of the Akatsuki organization.

Kusagakure: Hidden Village in the Grass

A small country surrounded by the Lands of Fire, Rain, Bird, Earth and Waterfall. This land has an abundance of bamboo forests, grasslands, rivers and mountains. Little more is known about the country except that it’s speculated that Grass ninja specialize in nature or plant jutsus. The most notable shinobi from Grass country is Zetsu. The country was invaded by Rock ninjas during the Great Ninja War. Sasori's meeting point with his spy, Kabuto, was set at the Tenchi Bridge in the Land of Grass.

Kumogakure: Hidden Village in the Cloud

Kumogakure is the shinobi village of the Land of Lightning and is one the five great shinobi villages. The cloud ninjas specialize in lightning or electric-based jutsus. Approximately 12 years ago, the Hidden Cloud and the Hidden Leaf signed a peace treaty to end a long and costly war. However, the the leader of the Cloud delegation, Gashira, attempted to kidnap Hinata Hyuga in order to steal the secrets of the Byakugan. But Hinata’s father, Hiashi, killed the Cloud shinobi. The Cloud denied the abduction and threatened to break off the peace treaty. To avoid war, Konoha accepted to give the dead body of Gashira’s killer. Neji’s father, Hirashi, who was Hiashi’s twin brother, was used in place of his brother to trick the Hidden Cloud.

Iwagakure: Hidden Village in the Rock

Iwagakure, also known as the Hidden Stone Village, is the shinobi village of the Land of Earth and is one of the five great shinobi villages. Its ninjas specialize in earth jutsus and are famous for their camouflage techniques which can make them practically invisible. Little else is known about them, except that they gave a deep rivalry against Leaf ninjas, having fought against them in several conflicts in the past. The last great battle took place approximately 16 years ago during in the Great Shinobi war. Iwagakure was defeated by the Leaf, but to this day there are rumors that they still plan to seek revenge.

Otogakure: Hidden Village in the Sound

A relatively new Hidden Village founded by Orochimaru after his desertion from the Akatsuki organization no more than 10 years ago. The former country, the Land of Rice Fields, was virtually taken over by Orochimaru in order to establish his Hidden Village in the Sound. The Sound ninjas all have abnormal techniques, usually due to experimentation by Orochimaru. Many specialize in techniques involving the manipulation of sound waves while an elite few possess the use of Cursed Seals. The Sound and Sand formed a temporary alliance in a plan by Orochimaru to invade Konoha. The plan failed resulting in heavy casualties on both sides.

Kirigakure: Hidden Village in the Mist

Kirigakure is the shinobi village of the Land of Water and is one of the five most powerful hidden villages, however due internal fighting, it is no longer as powerful as it once was. The Mist had in the past a large number of clans with powerful bloodline limit abilities and most shinobi are highly skilled in water based techniques. But due to their cruel training methods, the village also earned the name of the Bloody Mist. In the past, to graduate as Genins, students were forced to fight to the death against fellow friends and classmates. This tradition was terminated 22 years ago when one student, Zabuza Momochi, killed not only his opponent but more than 100 other students during the Genin trials.

The Land of Water took part in many wars in the past. The citizens suffered and blamed the clans that had Kekkei Genkais (bloodline limit abilities), and wiped out many of them some 19 years ago). Some shinobis fled while others hid their powers in order to live as normal citizens. In latter years, those who were discovered with bloodline abilities were feared, mistreated, and left without training in the Water country.

Sunagakure no Sato: Hidden Village of the Sand

Sunagakure is the shinobi village of Land of Sand and is one of the five great shinobi villages. It was created some 70 years ago through the gathering a large number of shinnobi. The techniques of Suna’s ninjas include the use of wind, sand and special puppet jutsus. Around 20 years ago, the Daimyo of Wind country began to reduce economic support to the Village. Sunagakura was forced to reduce the number of its ninjas, but compensated by increasing the quality of each one. This is one of the reasons why 16 years ago the Kazekage, leader of the Sand, ordered the sealing of the One-Tailed bijuu (demon beast) in his unborn child, Gaara.

Three years ago, Yodaime Kazekage made an alliance with Orochimaru to invade Konoha. However, the Kage was betrayed and killed. His successor and youngest son, Gaara, made peace with Konoha. Today, Konoha and Suna are allies and even have an exchange training program. Recently, the Akatsuki organization kidnapped the new Kazekage and extracted the bijuu that was sealed within him. Fortunately, Gaara was rescued by the Leaf’s ninjas, and was revived.

Shikamaru Nara

The Deal with him: Shikamaru is probably the laziest Genin in Konoha. But he's probably the smartest Genin in the village as well, with an IQ of over 200 points. Shikamaru loves just lying down looking at clouds thinking how carefree they are. Although Shikamaru only knows one technique - the Shadow Imitation Technique, his intelligence often helps him win battles. He is also calm in times of danger. Asuma, his teacher, describes him as "just like an old man" who likes to play chess, taking life at a very slow pace.

Shikamaru became the only genin to pass the Chuunin exams as the other Chuunins and examiners were impressed with him.

Ino Yamanaka

How to deal with her: When she was little, Yamanaka Ino found lonely Haruno Sakura and became best friends until Sakura found out that Ino liked Sasuke too and so they became rivals in love.

She's always flirting with Sasuke and fighting with Sakura over him (how annoying), always calling fellow teammate Akimichi Chouji a fat ass and to lose weight because he's not going to get any girl. Vain Ino is also very focussed in keeping her figure. She works at her family a flowershop. One of the only distinctions between between Ino and Sakura is that Ino is a better fighter and that she appears to treasure Sakura's friendship more than Sakura does.

Chouji Akimichi

Background: Chouji is from the Akimichi clan of Konoha and best friend of Shikamaru.

The Deal with him: Your first impression of him must have been "that fatass in Ino's group". Chouji is almost the definition of 'Gluttony'. He is a compulsive eater and he has got this really cool waistpouch that looks small but can contain bags of potato chips AND a cake.

Chouji's choice of the ninja headband looks suspiciously like an inverted underwear. He is mild-mannered and would avoid as many fights as possible, believing he'd lose anyway. Unless, of course, if you call label him a 'fatass'. Then he'd morph into a giant meatball and flatten you.

Chouji grew up with people making fun of him because he's fat and soft-spoken but don't look down on this butterfly. Besides turning himself into a meat tank, Chouji also has his clan's ultimate Houren pills to increase his chakra (though they come with great side effects). The 3 pills that reflect the traffic light colours lend him momentary great power when he take them. The final red pill though, not only increases his power to a hundred times and changes his voice but also doubles as an instant slimming pill.The drawback is that the user may very likely suffer from overdose and die.

During the Sasuke-hunt, Chouji demonstrated his pills' abilities when he fought Jiroubu of the Sound 4.

Shino Aburame

The Deal with him: Aburame Shino is a cool, collected, confident Genin from Naruto's graduating year who is quite mysterious and who always wears sunglasses. As a part of the Aburame clan tradition, Shino was infused with a special type of insects that feed on his chakra since birth and in return, they attack and do other tasks as he commands.

Shino was the only male Genin left out of the (failed) mission to retrieve Uchiha Sasuke when the latter decided to become a Missing-nin, and felt some bitterness and guilt over the matter, considering the eventual outcome might have been different had he been sent to help them as well.

Hinata Hyuuga

She blames herself for being weak and tries hard to change herself. Hinata idolizes Naruto, whom she believes to be strong and confident. She managed to gain a little more confidence in the Chunnin exams when Naruto cheered her on.

Kiba Inuzuka

Background: A Genin of Team 8, Inuzuka Kiba loves dogs and has jutsus in which he can pretend to be a dog.

The Deal with him: Kiba... loves dogs. It's a family thing. His faithful bow-wow is the little white canine named Akamaru, who turns red in the heat of battle with the help of Kiba's soldier pills. Their main combined jutsu involves transforming Akamaru into a Kiba look-a-like, and have the both of them growl and make other dog sounds so the enemy won't be able to tell which is the otherwise unintelligible one.

Kiba and Akamaru are almost never seen apart, and Akamaru is considered a ninja member of the team as well. While it is difficult to imagine the little puppy who is usually perched on Kiba's head to be useful in a fight, Akamaru have proven itself indispensible to Kiba's battles, and it's not only because it is capable of splashing enemies with his toxic dog-pee.

Gaara

Background: When Gaara was born, he took the life of his mother as a sacrifice. Gaara was an experiment attempt by the hidden village of Sand to 'build' stronger ninjas.

The Deal with him: Before the Chuunin exams, Gaara has never been hurt as the sand always protected him. He has never slept in years either as the Sand demon would take over his body and eat away part of his mind everytime he lose consciousness. Thus, Gaara has become quite mentally unstable. He has never felt love as his villagers feared and loathed him. His father, the Kazakage, sent ninjas to assasinate him since he was 6 years old as his powers was getting out of hand. The 1st of the assasins was Gaara's uncle whom he thought was the only person who loved him.

Ever since the incident, Gaara 'tattooed' the kanji 'love' on his forehead and swore to love only himself and sought to feel his existence by killing others. He was sent along with Temari and Kankuro on an A-rank mission. Seemingly to take part in the Chuunin exams in Konoha, Gaara transforming into the Shukaku was actually the Sand's trump card in their plan with the Sound to destroy Konoha. However, he was defeated by Naruto and escaped back to the Sand with Temari and Kankuro.

Temari

The Deal with her: Probably the toughest Genin to take part in the Chuunin exams with Naruto and gang, Temari is the daughter of the Kage of the Sand and sister of Gaara. In the guise of taking the exams, she and her teammates/siblings were actually sent on an A-rank mission. Her main function to assist in the Sand's invasion of the Leaf and keep a watch over Gaara. Her weapon is that big fan she carries with her and her main jutsu is the Whirlwind technique, which, at a wave of the fan from her, blows up a windstorm embedded with chakra to sting her opponents.

After the invasion for the Leaf by the Sand and Sound failed, she escaped back to the Sand with her siblings. She returned as an ally of Konoha wearing a funky new purple costume and an even shorter miniskirt during the Sasuke chase and helped Shikamaru fight the sound nin.

Kankuro

The Deal with him: Kankuro is probably best known for walking around in his pajamas and carrying heavy looking puppets on his back. Kankuro uses branded puppet weapons created by Sasori of the Red Sand, former Sand nin and current Akatsuki member.

Though a formidable ninja in his own right, Kankuro's career is shadowed by his baby brother Gaara's achievements. When they were little genins, all everyone talked about was how scary Gaara was. Gaara's insane abilities as the Shukaku's carrier also made him the the leader of the team. When Gaara became Kazekage, all everyone gushed about was how much they love him, once again side-lining Kankuro until he got beaten by Sasori of the Desert.

Kankurou's avid hobby with experimental face painting of various symbols and shapes is also really useful in distinguishing his age and timeline of events during the flashbacks in the anime.

The Deal with her: Quoted by Shikamaru's father to be the strongest and most beautiful of women, Tsunade is the 5th Hokage of the Village of the Leaf. The Godaime title was originally offered to Jiraiya, who turned it down and brought Naruto to hunt down Tsunade to take up the job. Before they found Tsunade, Orochimaru proposed a trade with Tsunade - to bring her little brother and boyfriend; both who died during the Ninja wars, back to life, if she would heal his arms so he could continue to destroy the Leaf. Tsunade was thus torn between seeing her loved ones again and protecting her village. She seemed to have chosen the former but fortunately for Konoha, Naruto reminded her of her dreams and her brother and boyfriend's dreams. So Tsunade beat the shit out of Orochimaru and returned to the Village with Naruto and Jiraiya to be the 5th Hokage.

Orochimaru

Background: The crazy one from the Legendary Sannin. Sarutobi's favourite student, who cracked after he was rejected from the title of Yondaime Hokage. He went into weird experiments that involved killing alot of people to create new jutsus to make himself immortal. He was exiled from the Leaf and later founded his own village.

The Deal with him: Sarutobi had noticed the malice and ambition in his snakey eyes even when he was just a genin. But the Hokage believed he could change Orochimaru as he saw much potential in him. It was a failed investment. Not only did Orochimaru grow up to be a twisted crazed psychopath, he also ultimately killed his teacher, but at the cost of losing the use of his hands/jutsus.

Orochimaru is a sore loser. He hankered after the title of the 4th Hokage, but after losing it to Yondaime, he claimed only idiots would want to be Hokage and sought to destroy the village.

His accomplishments are the founding of the Hidden Village of Sound, with the main objective being to destroy the Leaf (why? because he's a sore loser); developing malicious jutsus with one of them being to move his soul into somebody else's body so he could stay immortal, and biting people's neck to give them cursed seals. His current investment is Sasuke, whose Sharingan that can copy others' moves he is actively lusting after.

Jiraiya

Background: Our favourite one from the Legendary Sannin, a big pervert and author of "Come Come Paradise" (finally made into a full length movie coming to theatres near you!). Calls himself Frog Hermit, but Naruto prefers to call him 'perverted hermit'

The Deal with him: How our favourite pervert managed to pry his lusty eyes away from the babes around him to pay enough attention to his ninjutsu training and become one of the Legendary Sannin is still a mystery. Jiraiya is often seen playing a fool, peeping at females and drooling at hot chicks. But this ero-sennin knows when to play and when to be serious. Jiraiya was the student of the 3rd Hokage; the teacher of the 4th Hokage; and the teammate of the 5th Hokage, after rejecting the latter title himself.

The 1st time we see Jiraiya was when Ebisu was training Naruto for the Chuunin exams and the closet pervert tried to stop Jiraiya from peeping at the baths. Jiraiya slammed Ebisu unconscious and Naruto chased the pervert all over town to get him to train him, which he succeeded. They continue to bond and at times, Jiraiya was like the father Naruto never had.

Kakashi Hatake

Background: Team 7's teacher, and has a mysterious background regarding his Sharingan that everyone's dying to find out.

The Deal with him: Kakashi's the 1st ninja in the series that we see wearing a mask. His past is shrouded in mystery. His left eye is an implanted Sharingan eye which he used to copy over thousands of techniques, and earned him the nickname of Copy Ninja Kakashi. Infact, his only original move is the Chidori (Chirping of a Thousand Birds) or later also known as Raikiri (Lightning Edge) for cutting through lightning.

Team 7 is the 1st group of Genins that Kakashi passed as it seemed that they have comprehended the importance of teamwork. Yet now, it seems that the teamwork is falling apart because of Sasuke.

Though cool and very attractive, Kakashi is a somewhat biased teacher as we see that he places more energy in teaching Sasuke. He's not as serious when teaching Naruto and seems to give up on Sakura. He might be making the same mistake as Sandaime Hokage for 'investing' in the wrong ninja.

Kakashi is seldom on time for an appointment because he always spends too much time staring at his dead best friend's grave (how he died is another mystery).

Maito Gai

The Deal with him: Gai plays a relatively minor role, mainly comic relief and toothpaste endorsement. The 1st time we see him, he engaged in a dramatic embrace with Rock Lee in a picturesque golden sunset with the Sexy soundtrack in the background. The introduction promises much laughter everytime he comes on screen subsequently.

Most remembered scenes of Gai are when he tries to compete with Kakashi only to get "modern" nonchalent responses from his eternal rival and he goes "Oh My GOD!!".

Gai and Lee's relationship is very strong as the teacher tries his best to train his prized student to be the excellent ninja that Lee envisions himself to be.
